Question Use of Research Norms in Paid App

I'm writing an app which is an assessment tool for a particular disorder.

Is it legal to use information (norm reference data) and procedures published in research studies if I cite those studies?

For example a particular study outlines a procedure for gathering information while observing a patient, can my app have buttons to click in order to gather this information?

Additionally, can my app use norms which were established in that research study? For example if x number of symptoms are present then the disorder is considered severe.

Please advise me if more information is required, thank you.

Terribly sorry, I don't see how to edit my post. After some research I wanted to add that the app will involve not only this particular study, but several others (an amalgamations of methods to determine disorder).

The particular nature of the disorder has made assessment difficult because of the significant amount of data which needs to be collected and analyzed. This app will use new concepts (co-processing of a variety of analysis types) to reduce the several hour long processes to a 15 minute process with much more accuracy and consistency across several assessment paradigms, both to decrease difficulty and length of time of assessment as well as to increase robustness of each individual method of assessment and provide the ability to immediately judge inter-test reliability.

    Thanks for any info.

We can't answer this in the abstract. If in doubt, have a lawyer review the details of your plan.

Fair enough, thank you for the response. Is there anything I can add which might make an answer possible? Or is there a resource you can send me to which may have legalities specific to using data from research studies?

    Thank you.
