Default Can You Collect Unemployment for a Week When You're Too Sick to Look for Work

My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: CA

I was sick for one week and did not look for work that week. When filling out the continued claim form I answered that I was too sick to work and for 7 days that I was too sick. I answered NO to the question of whether or not I looked for work. I've already submitted that claim form and have not received payment for week two of which I did look for work.

    1) Can my entire claim be disqualified for admitting not looking for work?

    2) Will I have to have a phone interview for being sick?

    Thanks!

1.) Generally not, but you will not receive benefits for the period in which you did not, sick or not.

    2.) Probably not.

In CA, you will have a phone interview, and you won't receive anymore payments until it's been adjudicated.

Is the phone interview because I admitted to not looking for work? And actually, I did "look", I just did not apply for any jobs. Or was it because I admitted to being sick? Does that make a difference? Thanks for answering!

It's not just because you didn't look for work.

When you don't look for work because you are sick, it also suggests that you couldn't accept work if offered to you, and therefore would be not "able and available."

The interview is to make sure that you are now looking for work, and that if offered work, you are in a position to accept. Also, under CA rules, if you are only sick 1 day, then you are entitled to 6/7's of your weekly benefit, so they want to know how long you were too sick to work so that you could get the appropriate prorate if necessary.

Most places don't give interviews "The next day". So while sick, you were capable of looking for work and submitting online applications. Unless you were in a hospital.
