Hello,
I wanted to ask a question: I completed a graduate program on a J-1 visa under the sponsorship of an International US Institurion last August 2011. I wanted to ask if I can apply for an OPT in the USA now.

Hello,

Thank you
Where have you been for the past 1.5 years?
There's no such thing as J1 OPT.
You mean, then, another J-1?
OP, Did you go to F-1 without serving your 2 year home residency?
No, I completed a PhD on a J1, then went home in August 2011, and I am wondering if applying for Academic Trainning ... I found this site, and it seems that it is difficult but not impossible

You may not return to the US and use this to work when you are not a J-1 visa holder. Once you have served your 2 year residency, you easily qualify for H1B and transition to a GC if that is your personal and/or your employers choice (options available to you vary by your credentials). Since you have completed your PhD, why have you not pursued postdocs?
