Being a convicted felon should not always have the stigma attached to it. In Ohio there are 5 levels. At times, a 5th degree felony is a boderline away from a Misdemeanor of the 1st degree. One must say they were convicted and or plead guilty of a felony though.

A classification is only subjective, meaning another state may classify the same crime as a lesser offense.

Take for instance a felony theft amount, it could be just $2.00 away from being a misdemeanor, yet the person has to be known as a convicted felon if they are so or plead guilty.

In my state, if you steal a gun, regardless of market value, it is a felony.
Now we are getting into a philosophical argument which, while very interesting and relevant, is not going to help the OP very much.

The law is what it is.
