Question Can I Break My Lease if the Property is Not Safe and I Have Been Personally Affected

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: MI

I want to move from my place because within one month of living there my vehicle was broken into in the parking lot, costing me nearly $2k in damages. Less than four months later same thing happens again, someone breaks in my vehicle through a different entry point, causing so much damage to my vehicle to get a certaion item in the car causing another 2k worth of damage. My car has an alarm system, but its a high rise so I was not able to hear it at the time of these incidents. A neighbor saw the crime happening the second time and alerted the authorities. There are no locks on the entry doors because they are all broken, cameras inside the building do not work and there aren't even lights in the parking lot. It is pitch black when we come home at night. I have called the city, the leasing office and even asked the police officers in a desperate attempt to get something done. They never do anything about it. I live alone with my two toddlers and this place is not safe for us. I want to move, but I am in a lease. How can I move without being responsible for all of the cost?

This is a volunteer board, and people respond when they get a few minutes free from their families and jobs and the rest of their lives. When someone who believes they know the answer reads your post, they will answer. Meanwhile, it often takes more than 15 minutes to get an answer, so there is no need to post a second time if you don't get an immediate respond. As a former responder used to say, this is not Time Warner; operators are not standing by 24/7 to answer your call. Please have patience, and you'll get an answer soon enough.

of course you can break your lease, however what you describe will not allow you to get out of the penalties associated with doing so.

They did a lot of damage to get a certain item in the car?

that is why you don't leave valuables in the car in the first place.....
