My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Illinois
Hi
I live with 2 roommates, and we signed a 1 year lease that started on June 1, 2012 to May 31st, 2013. The landlord allowed us to move in 2 weeks earlier and charged us for just one week because our previous lease did not end until June 1st 2012, so he just wanted to get some money for May 2012, which we agreed to.
Now fast forward to the present. The landlord says that because when we moved in, we didn't pay for one week, so we had to move out a week earlier or pay for the last week's rent. We paid him because he blackmailed us by telling us he would look at every inch of the apartment for signs to use to keep our security deposit (he told us in person so we don't have evidence). I want to get the money back in court now since he still kept my pet security deposit, but our security deposit was returned.
The evidence we have is that we paid every single month's rent on time in full, and it covers the entire 365 days on the lease (6/1/2012 - 5/31/2013). We also have a voicemail message of him asking us to pay for the last week's rent.
Thanks for the help!
