Key point being the quotation marks. "Caught shoplifting"
Looking at this based soley on what you wrote - you did shoplift the sweater.

I cannot promise you that they will not prosecute, but I know that Macy's prefers to handle things via civil demand. They generally prosecute felonies, repeat offenders and those without ID/and or who fight.

Your chances of being prosecuted are slim, but are still there. Do as panther says and steal no more.

Oh my gosh. I cannot believe the chances of THIS! Did this incident happen Saturday at the Ridgewood Drive Macy's? I was THERE!. Yes, I was in the back room scared to death after I had been busted for the very first time shoplifting. I took a necklace and 2 sets of earrings worth $85. They were talking about you and how you were comming back to give the woman loss prevention worker, the white sweater. At the time I was scared to death...trembling.......and I am stilll trembling about the whole ordeal. You are fine. They said that they only wanted the sweater back.....they were worried that if you saw the patrol car outside you would think they were lying to you when they said they would not prosecute you. The guy that let you get away was in trouble.

This is the last thing I will EVER steal!!!!!!!!! They took all my information, made me sign a statement, took my picture then told me I COULD NEVER EVER GO INTO ANY MACY'S EVER AGAIN.....IN ANY MACY'S...FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. They stated that if I step foot inside, I would be directly arrested and they would prosecute to the fullest extent. I had to sign an agreement stating I would abide by this. I will be getting a fine from Macy's in the mail in the next few weeks. The female said that it was "My lucky day" and that since they were scrambling around doing all this stuff for YOU....they just let me go and would keep it internal. They reminded me that if they would have prosecuted....it would be permanently on my record and that I would have a hard time getting a job in the future. This was certainly a reality check for me. I am still having trouble sleeping and still scared. Just knowing I can go somewhere and be instanly arrested is freaking me out.

Well, even though I don't know you.....you made a big impact on the outcome of my life. Thanks to you, they were too busy to go any further with me.
