My question involves criminal law for the state of: NJ

I had a horrible houseguest. After Hurricane Sandy we took in someone, and he completely took advantage of us. I fed him, charged him nothing for rent and was repaid by him basically just loafing about helping himself to food the hot-tub etc. I eventually had enough and asked him to leave. He moved out, but continued to call me and my husband on a daily basis. He never made any threats, we never gave him the chance. I always hung up.
Any way I was having a particular bad day when I received my daily call from Louie. I had a lapse in judgement and called him a spic and a few other choice words.
That "beefed up" the telephone ringing. One of these calls the caller identified himself as a police officer and started interrogating me on the phone. I wasn't sure if it was a real cop or not, so I said things like "well if you're a real cop, why don't you come here and interrogate me?" then I would hang up. The "cop" would call back and ask personal information like my date of birth and full name. I gave a fictitious name and date of birth (Betty Boop, and 1776). This completely pissed off the little jerk on the other end. He called me back at least 4 times. I kept saying talk to my lawyer and hanging up.
Turns out it was a real cop from Middletown NJ and I was summoned to go to court for giving false information to a police officer to avoid persecution. I'm almost 45 and have never even received a traffic ticket. Now I'm facing criminal charges for not giving information to just anyone over the phone?!!
Also as it turns out, I'm not even afforded the right to trial by jury in NJ because it's a misdemeanor. I could still go to jail though... not to mention the heavy fines NJ lays on just about every one.... for everything. Is it not unconstitutional to not be able to have a trial by jury?
