Default Shoplifting at JCPenney in Michigan

Recently I was convicted for stealing a little over $120 at JC Penny. I was found with the merchandise and am charged by having to pay $200 (10X the amount). I have a court date in a couple of weeks and am really really nervous. I'm 18 and this is my first offense and I was just wondering if any of you know if it will go on my record, how much I could be fined by the court, and anything else that could be helpful for me. I can't afford a lawyer and it will be hard for me to afford all the fines.

    PLEASE HELP!

Even if you can't afford a lawyer, it would be good to check around to see how much the going rate is in your area. In the meantime there are many lawyers who do free initial consultations. You could set one up and ask your questions to the lawyer who would be more well versed in the local laws regarding this.

It's probably a good idea to go ahead and pay the demand, as they could possibly go after you in civil court for the money.

There's some online lawyer databases around... Try yellowpages?

Only "free" Lawyer you will find is public defender. Far as going on your record yes of course it does as does any conviction if convicted

    That's what I thought...

Do you know if this will be on my record forever??.. Will it come off like in a year?... I have also heard that there are possibilities of maybe not going on record... do you know if that's true??

    thanks for your help!

Criminal records last a lifetime. Michigan permits you to apply for expungement of a criminal conviction after five years, if you have only one conviction in your record; but even the you would have to convince the court that you deserve expungement.
