The police must initiate the tow if you were parked on a public street. No private citizen or tow company has the right to initiate a tow without official police authorization if you were legally parked -- even if it was in violation of the time length. If the local police, local sheriff, and state police have no record of your vehicle being towed, then it was likely stolen. If you do find a tow company has it and they cannot produce the authorization from the police to tow your vehicle, yet can show it was towed from that location, then they are the likely candidate which you will report to the police for possessing your stolen vehicle. If it was towed from a different location, then I think you're SOL, because someone dumped it. Check with surrounding states to see if it showed up there.
