Question Harassment, Slander and Threats on Facebook

My question involves defamation in the state of: Washington State

I bought a horse and decided it was best that I sold him due to a job loss. While trying to rehome him I had a person who I do not know start to harass, slander and threaten me about it on facebook, on another site where I found the horse from and through email. I have never been in this situation before so I did not go to my authorities yet. I have since come to found out though that one of the officers has mentioned my name and has been saying things to another party who informed me about it today. I don't know this person nor do I know how this officer knows me as I have never been in trouble with the law.

Because of the overwhelming stress and bulling from this person and a few others I ended up surrendering my horse to a local rescue group. This has really effected me mentally and ultimately has damaged my reputation.

I have never had this happen before so I'm at a loss of what to do. Is there anything I can do? Can anything be done about the officer? This has all happened recently.

You have not presented any information to suggest you would be successful suing over anything. Suing would cost several thousands of dollars you do not have. I suggest you move on.

Defamation suits are incredibly expensive to litigate in terms of both time and money. You're looking at several years, and tens of thousands of dollars. Attorneys will rarely take a defamation case on a contingency basis.

Can you prove damages? Can you actually collect if you obtain a judgment?

So a police officer was harassing and slandering you on FB? This doesn't sound like sanctioned behaviour for a police officer...why don't you report him to his superiors?

No the officer was not slandering me on facebook that I know of. I was told by another individual that the officer had mentioned my name to them. I am unsure of how this officer knows me as I have never been in trouble with the law.

I can prove the damages but it seems like I will be out of luck in trying to do anything to go after these two individuals unless I've got thousands to spare. Thanks for the help.

So you think a police officer stating your name to someone is slander and/or harassment? Because it really isn't...
