My question involves child support in the State of: California
Background: I the expected father of a baby boy from my ex-girlfriend. She is due in less than 2 months. We are trying to decide on how to go about child support and finances for the child. She has said that she wont file for child support and would just rather do things outside of the court if possible. She is willing to allow me visitation of my son during the first few months, as she will be nursing and bonding. In theory, we want to eventually have split custody 50/50. We were planning to start that around 6 months old (I do realize this may be too quick to ask for such a thing). We would like to come to an agreement ourselves and not have something court ordered where both of us would be unhappy.
Question: My ex is on MediCal and WiC and Foodstamps. The MediCal is covering the prenatal visits and delivery, I believe. I'm not sure if it will continue after the birth. I'm wondering whether the State will come after me to repay the medical costs and force child support on me. What we would rather do is have me pay child support outside of the courts, which would make it more flexible as my job hours can fluxuate. Will the state come after me? Any other advice based on the situation?
