Was the 3 day notice provided because you didn't pay the rent?
You folks need to understand that what you received was NOT a 3 day eviction notice but likely something along the lines of a 3 day Pay or Quit notice, giving you a certain amount of time to remedy the situation (likely, in this situation, to pay the rent). This notice is the first step PRIOR to filing for an eviction through the court system. This is why the police would have no knowledge of any of this.
Typically the next step if the situation is not remedied within this time period is for the landlord to file for the actual eviction through the court system. It would then be up to the courts to determine whether this request should be granted.
If the issue is that you haven't paid your rent for April (and now May) what the landlord is doing wrong is letting you slide this long without filing sooner to get you out. What you are doing wrong is living in a duplex without paying rent.
