Without knowing more details, that ONE incident alone wouldn't be persuasive. While a major faux-pas, we don't know the circumstances. There's a big difference between one moment of carelessness, and an intentional act of wanton disregard for safety. If he was drunk and waving the gun around and left it on the coffee table, that'd be bad and might indicate some serious issues on judgment. If he had set it aside when he used the bathroom and forgot it, that's another. While I have never left a gun at a friend's house, I HAVE left it on my bed. Once, about 9 years ago, my then 4-year-old son walked in as I was getting ready for work and he picked up my loaded handgun and dropped it. Terrifying! You bet! Careless? Yes. Have I made the same mistake again? No! By your way of thinking, I should probably not be eligible for a police job anywhere - much less a Chief's job based upon one moment of poor judgement ... though, in my defense, I was a few feet away changing and my son had never before come into the bedroom while i was getting ready for work. But, it DID change how I stow my gun when I am getting ready.
We don't know the facts in this case. Leaping to a conclusion on the man's character or even his qualifications for the job of Police Chief based on one news article seems premature. Now, if a law was broken in Yuma as a result of this, and the Chief is criminally charged, THAT might be sufficient to DQ him from the running ... but, an isolated act reported in the paper should not - by itself - be sufficient to declare a man ineligible or unworthy of the position of Chief.
He was having an affair with a dispatcher. After a night visit he leaves his gun. The kid finds it on the floor in the morning and points it at Daddy. The DA did not think a jury would convict him of endangerment. And no I don't think that what you did would DQ you from any position. I happen to think very highly of you. There is no comparison. If an opening comes up, he's looking for a job.
That wasn't in the article - that was in the innuendo posted afterwards in public commetns ... it may be true, but coming from a small town I know that the rumor mill is often just plain wrong. All because it's on the internet doesn't make it true.

If he was having an affair (as in, he or the woman was married, and she is also a subordinate) then, in my mind, THAT would disqualify him - not the gun.
Yeah, unless he left it in the kid's room next his toys, it'd be kinda hard to meet the elements of the offense. The DA did not think a jury would convict him of endangerment.
Thanks. And, I am also looking for another job, but I'll stay away from politically charged locales ... there's enough of that here (which is one reason why I am leaving). And no I don't think that what you did would DQ you from any position.
