My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California.
"We" rented a room from a "military couple" for $500/mo in January 2013. The "military man" said he would give us 3 months notice before moving.
This was a verbal agreement with both parties willing to do a written agreement but we procrastinated.
The "military couple" are about to have a baby and have been cheating on each other and are no longer a couple.
We have come to find that the "military couple" actually rented the apartment in his brothers name(who lives in South Carolina).
The Landlord of the apartments have been asking for a government ID from the person listed on the lease to finalize the lease. The "marine couple" are not able to do this, as it is not their name on the lease.
Now, the "marine couple" have decided last minute to move out and leave the balance of $1800 on our apartment. They still have not yet told us they are moving. All of their stuff is packed and slowly being moved.
"We" are now left looking for a room to rent, no funds for a deposit on a new place, and at the mercy of the apartment landlord.
They have come by saying if a payment isn't made the sheriff will come and do a lockout. We have no idea what are rights are or how to handle this.
