Question Tuition Debt After Dropping Out

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: California

I attended the Art Institute in California within the last couple of years. My issue is that I dropped the school after about a weeks and a half-2 weeks. I was lead to believe that the program that I was in was very in depth, and challenging. I come to find out that I'm the ONLY student in the program. When I started, they assigned me 2 classes. throughout the 1 1/2-2 weeks of these 2 classes, neither of them kept me any longer than 10-15 minutes a day. I was given homework and released. 1 of the teachers told me it was because he had to drive all the way in from Orange County and he didn't want to hit any traffic on the way home. I dropped the school, and now they're saying I owe the school $2,506. I'm trying to figure out what I owe that money for. I've received nothing. The way I'm looking at this is that I'm having to pay $2,506 for signing a piece of paper, because in the grand scheme of it all, that's all that I got!! A piece of paper with my signature. I didn't receive any education in any aspect of the word. They've escalated this matter to a debt collector. I've taken every one of their calls an expressed this issue to them, but they don't care, their only job is to collect money...Not listen to my problems. I'm considering filing bankruptcy as my credit was hit pretty hard in 2006 after a motorcycle accident rendered me useless for almost 7 months. I would like to know if there's any way to have this debt removed altogether as I don't feel as though I actually owe these monies. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Default Re: Tuition Debt After Dropping Out

When you sign up for college you agree to pay tuition. You also agree as to what will happen if you withdraw from classes. Typically there is a short period of time when you can get most or all of your money back, followed by a period of time where you can get part of your money back, and a subsequent period in which no refunds are offered.

Did you formally withdraw from classes? Pursuant to your contract with the college and the timing of your withdrawal, do they owe any refund or credit of tuition toward the balance you owe?
