My question involves criminal law for the state of: Oklahoma
I was recently got caught shoplifting at Hobby Lobby. The amount totaled up to about $190 and this is my first offense. I know what i did was really stupid of me.Here's what happened: I came out of the bathroom and there the manager and his employees waited for me. He told me to follow him to his office. The manager told me to sit down, asked me general questions, my ID then called the cops. The officer came and they both questioned me, emptied my bag and made me empty my pockets. They filled out some paperwork, made me sign some papers (i was in shock to read them), and took a picture of me(the manager). They both escorted me outside to the officer's car. there the officer then asked me why i did it and i broke down. he said he wouldn't take me to jail but gave a slip (that i signed). It says Oklahoma Uniform Violations Complaint. It also says the minimum fine and cost is $549 and the court date. But i don't get why i was fined so much? Shouldn't the fine be around $50-500?It was my first offense. Also I'm an A and B student. I've never gotten in trouble. I take AP and advanced classes. Also how do you know if the manager is aplying charges? Do you get a letter from court? What do you do after you get the violations complaint? And please, don't say i need to hire/consult a lawyer, i know that.
