Is it Safe to Send a Cancelled Check to a Collector to Validate my Proof of Payment to him?
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Washington.
JNR adjustments claims I haven't yet paid a debt although I have the cancelled check to JNR from a couple of months ago. The adjuster says that I have to provide proof of payment by sending a copy of the cancelled check, but of course that includes the routing and account #. I'm afraid they'll use that to take further payments, I cannot allow them access to my account generally. Questions:
1) It could be sloppiness, but it sure sounds like a scam that they don't have proof that I've paid.
2) Is there any actual danger in sending them the cancelled check?
3) Can I require that my bank disallow any access to my account?
4) Given this escalation, what else should I be doing to protect myself?
Thank you!
