Default Becoming a Police Officer with a Public Intoxication Charge

Eight years ago, my fiancee was arrested for public intoxication (in a bar parking lot) in the state of Indiana. He has nothing else on his record, except a handful of speeding tickets for 10+ years ago. I don't know if it's relevant, but this was in his young 20's shortly after his mother's death.

Since then, he's gotten his GED, returned to college, and is one year away from completing a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He has also worked for the same company for 11 years and has a great recommendation from his current employers. In the past eight years, his only legal troubles include a single speeding ticket.

I've done a bit of checking with police recruiting websites, and it looks as though his background check would not prevent him from becoming an officer. It just looks like "young and dumb" but nothing showing bad moral character.

Is there anything he can do to improve his chances of becoming an officer? He went on a ride-along with a K9 unit yesterday and loved it -- it breaks my heart to think what he went through almost 10 years ago will never leave him.

It's going to depend on the hiring policies of the individual police departments he applies with, as I understand it. Stand by for Carl.

This is not an automatic bar from employment, and from what you say here it shouldn't be an issue at all for hiring unless the agency he applies for has been burned before by someone with a 10-year-old public intox.

He should be okay provided he is otherwise qualified.
