Default Can I Get Emancipated if Somebody Will Support Me

My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Washington.

So I'm currently 15 but I turn 16 in April and I would like to be emancipated. It's not my first choice but my mother cannot pay for my schooling and is struggling. We have a very bad relationship and she has violated my privacy several times. I don't want to offend my mother, I just want to move out for the summer perhaps longer so that my friend can pay for my education and drivers license. I've done some research on the fact that she can call the cops on me if I'm not emancipated before I leave. Is there a way to change who my legal guardian is instead if I don't get emancipated?

If your friend can pay for your education, why can't your friend pay...regardless?

Emancipation is for teens who need the ability to sign contracts etc. It is not a way for teens to escape from their parents.

If Mom is willing to sign off on guardianship, that might be an option. Where is Dad?

You do not have a right to privacy where your mom is concerned. The problem is you, not mom.

What you describe wanting to do is not in the least the same as emancipation (which you do not qualify for anyway).

Dad left when I was four leaving my mother with full custody. I'm not just escaping my mother. My mother won't let him pay for anything. My mother has no money, she can't support me. My education is more important to me than a relationship with her.

Tell me then what is required to be emancipated because I would love to be enlightened.

In WA state, you need to show that you're living away from your parents/legal guardians and that you are capable of supporting yourself.

If you can do that, and you live in King County (perhaps Pierce), you might stand something near a 3% chance of the petition being approved.

Any other county? More like 1%.

Emancipation is about NEED - not want. It's for kids who, through NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, need to be able to sign legally binding documents, getting the power in their own name, that sort of thing.

    Consider yourself enlightened.
