My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: MD
Hello everyone. I recently broke my apartment lease early in the state of MD, however I was told that if I find a replacement tenant then there would be no penalty. I did find a replacement tenant (whom I paid $650 to replace me). I went in and watched him sign each page of the lease, which specified that he was liable for rent on my old apartment from Mid February 2013 until mid February 2014. A week later the new tenant called and upgraded to a different room within the same complex. The landlord is now saying I am responsible for the continuing rent until a replacement is found. Even though the replacement had not moved in yet, he did sign a lease specifying the dates and the property address he was liable for. My issue here is why am I liable for the rent on a lease that the replacement tenant signed? Please let me know what I can do about this. Thanks.
