    Default Accessing Somebody Else's Email

My question involves civil rights in the State of: Wisc

Not sure if this is the right place to ask.

I accidently knew one friend's password to his email account(by guessing, it was just his gf's birthday). I did log into his email account a couple times (3-4), but I didn't do anything other than read some emails. Now I think he found it out by noticing the login ip (we live in different states, but went to the same school), and knows that it was me because the only one he knows that lives in Wisc is me. Apparently he is very angry about it, and seems to want to charge me (we didn't have good relation). I am aware that what I did was illegal, but would I get any serious trouble (like jail)?

He is a college student and it was a personal email account, so there is nothing important (no financial information or anything like that) there.

    Thank you in advance!

While what you did may technically be a crime, it is not the kind of crime that is going to get any DA all worked up enough to prosecute you in another state.

Unless some harm came about as a result of your snooping, I suspect that no prosecution will be forthcoming. But, you should refrain from EVER doing something like that again!
