Default Getting in Trouble for Reporting Child Porn

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Georgia.

I accidently came across a blog which to me, is suspicious of one photo of child pornography. I immediately closed it. A few days later I had some time to research how to report possible URLs. However, I could not find the website again. Stupidly, I tried searching for it specifically, probably used some nono keywords. Anyway, I called the lost hotline and she advised me to search my history. Indeed I found it. I reported the URL with a direct jpg picture.

I felt like I finally did something right! I was proud for a moment. Then I read other peoples stories. Some say the people who report images can get introuble! I'm scared to death now, I've only had a Parket ticket my whole life!

I did not save the image to my computer. I reported it within days. I used a website that reports cases to the FBI. Under the optional section, I filled out ALL of my information. Last thing, the HDD I used during this incident has crashed. Right now I'm using my phone to post this. Can I really get in trouble? I'm so scared! Help!

your hard drive crashed? you did that search just to find the URL you were at before?

Are you sure you didn't search those terms then destroy your hard drive in a panic?

I don't believe your version of events at all and i don't think a jury would either.

The good news is it is very unlikely that you will be investigated just because you reported a website.

Law Enforcement receives a lot of information about child porn sites from people who in the course of searching legal porn sites, stumble across illegal ones. The fact that you reported the site to the FBI in the first place probably means you are in no trouble. But the fact that you downloaded a picture from that site to send to the FBI was not smart. Just the URL of the site's location is all they need. My guess (and my opinion here is only a guess) is that the FBI will not prosecute you over this. In the future, leave the sleuthing up to the authorities that do it best and never ever download child porn evidence. Let law enforcement do their job.
