My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Georgia.
Hey guys, I was just served a civil paper stating that I'm being sued for debt, that has been in collections for a while now. I'm 24 now, but got the credit card when I was 18, and of course, maxed it out immediately. I paid minimum payments on it for a year or so, and it went to collections a year or two after that. My guess is that this company has owned it for 3-4 years. I know a lawyer, but he's not much older than me, and has minimal experience in this field.
The debt is approx $1,300, with interest of approx $700, and court fees of $100.
If I get a lawyer, I'll be paying him/her almost this much up front, which defeats the purpose in my opinion. My girlfriend's older sister went through this exact thing around 10 years ago, and was able to talk them down to only paying the debt, minus the interest and fees.
I just need some advice on the best course of action here. Thanks a lot in advance.
