Default Doctor Mismanaged Patient's Chronic Medical Conditions

My question involves medical malpractice in the state of: Illinois

I have been a patient in the county health's system since 2001. In that time I have been diagnosed with about 25 conditions, and I am seen in eight different specialty clinics. The problem: Because of a third party, the doctors don't treat my conditions properly, if they treat them at all. Example 1: I have had Type II Diabetes since 2001, but the doctors have never given me any medication for the condition. I have been on diet and exercise to control this condition for 12 years despite a number of complications including Glaucoma (left eye, totally blind 2004); Retinopathy (diagnosed 2004); chronic foot problems from fungal infections (started 2004 and continue); Overactive bladder diagnosed 2010; gum disease - I have remnants of six teeth that have rotted from the inside out.

Example 2: I have Rhematoid Arthritis and I see Rheumatologists. However, they always note on my form that blood tests were negative or borderline for the condition. Yet, I came to the ER on two occasions for hand and wrist injuries I received from everyday activities. I also have most of the signs of the condition from the Arthritis Foundation, such as morning stiffness; pain in multiple joints; involvement in other bodily systems - food allergies at 40 + years of age; Uveitis (inflammation in both eyes); Dry eyes, Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids); psoriasis, etc. I have been on methotrexate for over two years, and I refuse increases in the med because of side effects. I am not getting the proper treatment in this regard wither, plus they seem to minimize my symptoms on my progress notes. Also, I tried to get them to complete a form so I can get a reduced bus fare, but they ignored me.

Example 3: I recently stopped keeping my appointments with the Primary care physician because she doesn't to anything to help me. She constantly tries to give me high blood pressure medication that is contraindicated for my other conditions. Specially, she keeps prescribing beta blockers even though I told her I had to stop take the specific medication in the past because it made my "legs feel heavy, and I had trouble walking." Also, during last the appt with her, I asked for booster of the pneumonia vaccine. She did not order it and left the clinic before I was told that was the reason I couldn't get the shot. Plus I told her I need a rx for baby aspirin, but she didn't give me that or any medication.

This is just three examples. There have been many more over the years, including my being sent to the ER for management of high blood pressure, but when I arrived, they gave me nothing to lower it, then lied about my last blood pressure reading so they could discharge me. My question is - isn't all these "little things" over the years enough to amount to a lawsuit? There are a lot more examples, some of them are worse then these mentioned above.

    1. Diet and exercise is often used to control diabetes. What makes you believe you need "medications" for this? Your Diabetes has nothing to do with your Glaucoma and Overactive Bladder.

    2. You claim you're not getting proper treatment for your Rheumatoid arthritis yet you are on Methotrexate, one of the most effective treatments for this disorder. Yet you yourself refuse an increase in the dosage to alleviate any symptoms you are complaining about.

    3. Your Primary Care physician was attempting to treat your hypertension. You refused to take the medication this physician prescribed and as a result, have had many ER visits because of uncontrolled hypertension. Oh, and a bottle of baby aspirin is under $2 in an drug store; it's an over the counter medication that does not require a prescription.

You are a patient with both a long list of chronic medical issues and long history of noncompliance problems that you are now attempting to blame on your medical providers. As such, your chronic medical issues will likely worsen. This does not mean your medical providers have been negligent in attempting to treat your medical conditions. The irony of all of this is that, as a patient in the county health system, you are likely charged far less than what a private pay patient would be required to receive the same services for their health care needs.

You're not going to get better results if you refuse increased dosage. I was diagnosed with RA myself when I was 17, and it's a pretty annoying disorder to contend with. Like you, I am seronegative. Unlike you, however, I'm not afflicted badly enough to use methotrexate. If you're badly enough off to need methotrexate, you'd do well to pay attention to your docs and let them increase the dosage.

She constantly tries to give me high blood pressure medication that is contraindicated for my other conditions.
Ask her to try an ACE inhibitor instead. Your hypertension will only get worse if you ignore it. No, I don't want to hear about the side effects. You have to let your body get used to your medications. My antihypertensive made me vomit for three weeks before that finally stopped, and now my BP is normal. My anti-depressant makes me profoundly stupid and unable to function mentally for several hours after I take it, so now I take it before I go to bed. Side effects suck, but so does being sick, and if you're not going to pay attention to your docs, any worsening of your conditions is your own fault.
