Default Is it Possible for a College Student to Avoid Paying a Full Reinstatement Fee

My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: New Mexico

In 2011, I was in the parking lot of a McDonald's and I noticed a police officer drive by my vehicle slowly. I was nervous because I did not have my wallet on me and I was driving a friends car after we just finished repairing it. My friends vehicle didn't have registration or insurance because it was broken down for a couple years, but I didn't realize the registration was expired. The police officer did notice it the expired registration on the plate in the parking lot, and he waited til we left the parking lot. As soon as we got on the road the officer popped out of his hiding spot and immediately pulled us over. I was issued three citations for no registration, no insurance and no Drivers license. At the time I forgot all about it. I never received a notice to appear in court.

Just this year my Drivers License expired and I went to MVD to renew it. They told me my license was suspended and I had to pay the fines first before the suspension would be lifted. I called the courts and they couldn't find my records, after some time they did find it but my name was spelled wrong, and then they told me that it would cost $435! I am a broke college student taking a heavy load of classes, and I am on a couple scholarship that hardly pay tuition and books. Any extra money I make goes directly to living expenses. I make less than $5000 a year. I commute 40 miles from home to school twice a week, without a drivers license I can't go to school. I have been driving my dad's vehicle, he is insured and I am covered as a second driver under his plan. Can anyone offer me advise in how I can handle this situation. I'm not trying to get out of being responsible for my actions, but I just can't afford to pay the fines right now and I need a license to go to school. Is there any way to get my fines reduced or waived so I can get my license back?

EDIT: When I called the court house. The lady referred me to their automated collection service. She never mentioned if I had to go to court.

Wow, you must get pulled over all the time, if you do not remember getting 3 tickets. Possibly you were on hallucinogenics? Now you need to go to court, answer for the warrant that is likely out for your arrest and pay the fines.

If you're telling us that $435 pays off all three tickets, despite your default, and your driver's license reinstatement fee, it sounds like you're getting off cheap. Please clarify.

If you can't afford your fines, you can't find a way to borrow money to pay your fines, you don't want to sell your stuff to pay your fines, and nobody's about to give you a generous gift, you have the option of not driving while you save your pennies.
