Default 17 Year Old Caught Shoplifting in New York

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
Yesterday I was caught shoplifting $46 worth of clothes. My store manager filed out some paper work, I had to sign them and was told I'll receive a fine in the mail. The police came, I was arrested and detained for a few hours. My picture and finger prints were taken. I was let out without bail to my parents. The police officers told me not to worry too much about it. They told me since I'm 17 and a first time offender the judge may be lenient with me. Also that I'll most likely get probation for 6 months and then it'll be removed from my record after that. the store manager told me the same thing. They also told me that to plead not guilty. I'm not sure if they're serious or just not trying to scare me.
If it gets removed will it show when I apply to jobs ? Also I recently applied to colleges will they see this?

Never take advice from the police. The "fine you will receive by mail" is NOT a fine. It is a civil demand from the store for restitution that is unrelated to your criminal charges. Since there are criminal charges in play, you would be well advised to have a lawyer. While such a probation is possible (in New York it's called ACD), it's not a guarantee. You can bet that colleges would see such if they were inclined to look.

That's a realstic out come, don't count your chickens before they are hatched. Plead not guitly, ask about getting acd which seals and dismiss the charge after 6 months. Until the 6 months has passed a job search might bring up the arrest it depends. After 6 months everything should be sealed and in ny atleast it should legally be like you never got arrested . Google acd new york. Sometimes they offer to reduce this charge to disordely conduct but an acd is better and seals the information more.
