Default First Offense in Vermont - Can I Skip a Lawyer Cost

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Vermont

I got caught with less than 1oz of marijuana.
I cannot afford a lawyer for $1,000. I am 18 and parents are pissed.

I understand there is a deferment process, diversion that eliminate or cleans or settles the charge after 6 months.
My question is, do I have a realistic chance of getting deferment/diversion on my own? What exactly would I be saying if I was seeking diversion? Do I need to submit a guilty plea?

I feel that, and pardon my lack of experience with the judicial system as I've never had to deal with it in my life.
Do I need to spend the $1000 or more to get representation when it is a standard process that I can just ask the judge for.
Do I just araing the settlement with the court clerk beforehand.

What is the cheap solution that I cannot screw up

With your finances, you may qualify for a public defender or a bond attorney. You need to plead not guilty, inform the court that you are indigent and request a public defender.

You are not a minor. Your parents' money should not be an issue. unless you are a depedent of theirs. If you are, then pony up that $1000.
