No your life is not over, It's always a good idea to get a lawyer if you can afford one. You are most likely looking at probation and community service unless, you can get into some kind of diversion program, you can speak to a lawyer or public defender about that.

I know where you're coming from, it feels like the end of the world. The laws are harsh for something that feels like just a momentary lapse in judgement. It wasn't always like this. Apparently they started stepping up the punishments like twenty years ago or so...

Just try to think of it this way - you might have a blemish on your record. But on a scale of 1 to 10 in criminal behavior, this is like a .5 on the scale, it's not like you robbed someone at gunpoint or even killed someone. There are so many people who have shoplifted before, and so many people who have gotten caught. You're not the first and you won't be the last... people deal with it. And maybe getting stopped this time, although it feels terrible and horrible, would have prevented you from doing something else even worse, or else, prevented you from being caught with even more stuff at another time.

You have to get it together! Deal!

As member of Loss Prevention profession I feel its safe for me to guess what will happen. I have arrest countless kids your age for even worse. Yuor life is not over! You will arrive in court and be offerd a plea deal. Unless you are innocent take the deal! Deal will have you serve NO jail time some community service as a fine your parents or you will have to pay. Many states also allow Civil Recovery which means store can fine you for time they took with you that fee is nomrally around $200.00. It can be as high as $1000.00 in some states but guess on a $200.00 demand letter in mail. You can make payments and yourparents again will be resonsible because your under 18. You will be placed on probation which mean sif you get into trouble again before probation ends you can see jail time. Your 17 when yo turn 18 your records become sealed so dont worry. Take as lesson learned

In Michigan, 17-year-olds are adults for purposes of criminal law, so the conviction would result in an adult criminal record, not a juvenile record.

Most people have recommended getting a lawyer to help reduce the charges. Whether you get a lawyer or not though, you can still hunt for some local lawyers to schedule a consultation (usually free) to talk over your situation and get information about what you can do, and laws in your area regarding this.

The rest of my post applies even if your tried as an adult. Yes this wil follow you and could cause problems if anyone runs a retail theft background check on you
