Here's a nonjudgmental reply.
My experience has been that they like the "unimpeachable types." In other words, if a lawyer takes your case, and it goes to trial, the first thing the other side will focus on is the alcohol use, which could have caused the psych issues (will probably need an expert to testify, too, which would be expensive). If you hadn't been drinking, and the cops took you to jail, maybe you would have a better argument. I can't say for sure that a lawyer would have invited you in for a consultation, but the people here probably would be less judgmental, I think. I am not a lawyer, but I see a lot of people being blown off by lawyers and others because they have substance issues.
