Default Prospective Employer Expects Me to be Bilingual, But I'm Not

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Georgia

I am a recent college graduate, and I have an interview tomorrow with the Public Defender's office (as an investigator) and need some help.

I meet most of the things that the job prefers and/or requires such as knowledge of legal terminology, multi-tasking, was involved in Mock Trial team, Volunteer Assistant Instructor of Spanish (am not fluent).

I got a job interview, but the job description also states that being bilingual is preferred and I may have got the interview because they think that. However, I only know spanish phrases, so how would I explain that I am not fluent? And how much would this hurt my chances of getting the job? Any tips to overcome this?

Also, I have no paid job experience other than that I have only volunteered and been involved with school activities, etc.

If they are looking for someone who is bilingual and you are not, you will not get the job.

preferred, not required. You go and interview and be honest when asked about your fluency with the language.

The problem is, "...I may have got the interview because they think that....."

Are you concerned simply because you listed "Volunteer Assistant Instructor of Spanish" on your résumé without being fluent, or did you make additional representations that were or might have been misleading?

Don't disagree, but let's not forget to cash the reality check. In the current job market, they're not going to have any trouble finding someone who meets all the preferred requirements and not just some.

By all means go and interview. It's just barely possible that they'll hire you simply because they can get you cheaper than someone else because of your lack of experience. But if they want bilingual, someone who only speaks a few isolated phrases is going to be on the bottom of the preferred list.

I did nothing to mislead them and did not state that I was fluent whatsoever. I just wanted to know if that would be a problem. Any other tips?
