Default Getting a New Job With an Expired Green Card

    Hello legal experts.
My green card has just expired. Can I apply for citizenship or do I have to get a new green card first? Are they really strict about having a valid green card before applying for citizenship?
Also is it possible to change my job with an expired green card?
PR status is supposed to be good for life (unless you abandon it) isn't it even though the card itself has an expiration date.
I have lived continuously in the US and have not left the country in several years.
    Thank you.

You need to renew the green card.

You will need it to get through the citizenship process. Yes they are strict about it. An employer who is complying with the law will require proper indication that you are authorized to work. A green card is a slam dunk. If you have a driver's license AND a social security card (other than one branded that you aren't authorized to work) that will suffice as well.

    Thanks very much!
I have a social security card but no drivers licence or other US ID card.
Can a good law-abiding employer really not accept a recently expired green card? Are they allowed to retain an employee whose green card expires?
If things are so strict, i would mean that I can't change jobs until after my green card has been renewed.
Of if you're unemployed, you would have to wait months for the renewal to finish before being able to get a new job.
Am I right in thinking that the card number is same after renewal - only the expiration date and photo are different?
    Thanks again.

Not only CAN a good, law-abiding employer refuse to accept a recently expired green card, a good law-abiding employer MUST refuse to accept an expired green card, no matter how recent the expiration may be. The employer is also required to reverify the information on an already-hired employee BEFORE the green card or other work authorization expires.

Yes, things really are that strict.

Failure to pay attention to the expiration date on your green card is not a crisis for anyone but you.

Actually, I have a State ID card and a Social Security card - so I think I'm good to go!
With these documents I will be able to change jobs whenever I want to and never have to renew my green card (unless I want to travel abroad).
    State Id card: $24
    Green Card Renewal: $450

So you've given up the idea of naturalization?

And when your state ID expires?

Yes - if not for the seemingly unnecessary $450 green card renewal I might have been interested.
For me the main point of acquiring citizenship was unrestricted travel abroad. Leaving the country for good is something I expect to do someday but being a citizen always gives you the opportunity to return at any future date. That would be quite nice to have but is by no means essential. It would be well worth having if not for the tax on worldwide income nonsense that America uniquely enforces on its citizens.

State IDs are good for 4 or 5 years in most states I think. Mine has 3 years left. I believe they can be renewed easily enough.

Anyway, problem solved - I can change jobs at will. I guess the only wrinkle might be if there is a government department somewhere that searches for out of status individuals and then deports them or forces their employer to fire them.
