What Can I Do if My Postal Money Order Was Stolen After I Mailed It to My Landlord

My question involves an eviction in the state of: California

I mailed a postal money order to my landlord in September. By mid October he notified me that my rent was late. I immediately went to the post office with the receipt and filled a request to track the money order. Today when I went to my mailbox, I received the report from the post office that shows where my money order had been stolen and cashed by someone. I also received a 3-day notice to pay or quit sent to me by my landlord. What are my rights? Today is Sunday and I will be going to the post office first thing Monday morning to ask for a replacement money order, however I was told by someone that I may not get the money replaced. Is this true?

Well, yes. If they can prove it's been cashed. Can you make out the name on the signed money order? (I assume the post office has a copy of it)

You were instructed to deliver checks to your landlord by what method? The check would have been stolen from where?
