Default Caught Stealing from the Register at Work

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I got caught stealing money from a cash register at work. Less than $400. Loss prevention came in and had a meeting with me and I came clean. I signed a paper stating I would pay them back the whole amount. I got suspended from work. They said the police would be contacted about this. Today is Monday and this happened last Thursday and as of then the police haven't came in. I haven't been in trouble with the law before. I'm so scared and I haven't slept since then either. How long will this process take? What's next? What should i expect?

You should expect to be fired. You should expect to be turned down for unemployment benefits. You should expect to have difficulty finding another job.

When or if the police will contact you, I haven't a clue. It will depend on a number of factors, none of which we know.

As long as it takes. There's no standard answer.

Depends on what your employer wants to do. Expect to be fired, at the very least.

When your employer contacts the police. If your employer contacts the police. How busy the police are. Whether the DA thinks this is worth investigating. How long it takes for the paperwork. How backed up your employer is. How backed up the police are. And so on.

If you signed a paper saying you will pay the loss back, then it is unlikely that the police will take any action in the long run. The store effectively turned this into a civil matter. You can expect to be terminated, but I suspect that once the police (or, the DA if it gets to that point) discovers that the store entered into a contractual arrangement, they may not pursue criminal charges.

I did sign a paper and I even put the amount that I would pay every month to them.

I can't afford a lawyer. Do you think I'll need one?

If you are charged with a crime, an attorney will be appointed for you if you cannot afford one.

I've been trying to get ahold of Loss prevention department so I can get an update because I don't like the waiting game and no one is answering or returning my calls.
Anything else I can do so I can atleast get some peace of mind.
