Default I-20 Aproved for 4 Semesters for a Three Semester Program

    Hi
I'm an international student with an F-1 visa studying a masters program in the US.
My program I initially enrolled was a 3 semester program, however the International Students Office (ISSO) at my university, issued my I-20 for 4 semester although they knew the program was shorter. So my I-20 was approved for 2 years from fall 2011 to Spring 2013, specifically until May 30, 2013, which is also my expected date of graduation (May 23, 2013).
Very recently the ISSO told me that they made a mistake in the dates of my I-20, that it should really be until Dec 2012 instead of May 2013.
and that they will correct the mistake right away by updating my SEVIS record and issuing a new I-20 with a program end date of 12/21/2012. That if I need to stay for one more semester to complete my program requirements, I need to do a I-20 extension before the end of the semester, which implies sending immigration documents and financial statements again for the remaining semester, all of which will take around 4 months to get an approval back from immigration.

I'm really worried because It changes all my plans for next semester. The reason I'm not graduating this semester is that, I need to get A or B in all my courses and unfortunately I got C in two of them and thus I need to take two more courses next semester in order to graduate. Also I'm planning to do an internship during next semester along with my remaining courses, but ISSO says I won't be able since I can't do internship until I get an answer back from immigration.

Afterwards I talked to my program advisor about switching to a program I really like, this program has a duration of two years, all courses fit perfectly and also it has as requirement an internship I'm very excited for. It was approved and now I'm no longer in the 3 semester program. However ISSO says I need to extend my I-20 and show updated financial documentation again anyways.

I want to know if an I-20 extension is really required. It doesn't make sense to me to do extension if my I-20 goes until May 2013.
And will this interfere with my internship plans for next semester as ISSO is saying?
    What should I do?

I really appreciate any advice you could give me,

    Thank you in advance

The DSO (ISSO) is the best person to advise you. He/she knows the specifics of your situation.
