Question Does Being an Unemployed Full-Time Student Affect My Citizenship Process

    Hi!

I was employed the past 5 years till a few weeks ago, I had trouble w/ babysitting for my 6 year-old son. So, I decided to quit my job. I have been a full-time student at a local community college since Aug, 2011. I major in Criminal Justice & have 1 more year to finish my Associate degree.

I have an interview with Metro Police Department for a volunteer position in 2 days. I figure I would need experience when I graduate. I'm currently taking 3 classes right now and will be taking 5 classes next Spring '13 semester.

How I can support myself is I have child support, student loans & federal financial aid. Most importantly, I am not a spender.

Does being unemployed affect my citizenship process? Would it be acceptable to the USCIS that I'm a full-time student and volunteering for the States?

    Thank you so much!

Living off of loans and grants is not being self supporting. Child support is not income. It is support for a child. That said, As long as you are in process, in status and did not falsify any information in your N-400 or in application of student loans, grants etc, you should be OK.

Here is a link from the Seattle Public Library, so you can stay up to date on the requirements.

As a permanent resident, you are free to work or not as you choose. Your means of support will not affect your citizenship as you do not utilize the "public charge" benefits. These are listed in the documentation.
