And they can also identify a regular customer, trying to make a truly massive purchase, who genuinely forgot about one item in a full cart on one of many trips.
    Oh, yup, they sure can.

I have a huge party for Independence Day every year, and the shopping trips to prepare are HUGE and my favorite cashiers tease the hell out of me about them. Last year, with a cart full of food and beer and a head full of lists of things I needed to do, I forgot that I had a bag of dog food on the bottom of the cart. My bagger didn't notice it either, til I was halfway out the door. "Hey, Miz B, did Donna get the dog food?" And I had no idea, so we looked at the receipt, found it was not there, and I paid for it.

It has been my experience that if you're a known customer and you're nice to the personnel, you're unlikely to get dragged off to the LP office if you have a brain fart and forget that you've got a bag of dog food (or whatever) under the cart. If you go out of your way to be un-noticed in the store, though? LP notices, and they will NOT countenance the brain fart excuse.

Don't really wanna bring this up......BUT!.......can we try NOT to make this some sorta default how-to?

Might be just me, but it almost seems like we're leanin' toward a how-not-to-get-caught discussion.

I think the key thing is....regular customers with big purchases (or multiples) can honestly forget an item.

I could believe some of the posters here if it weren't for things like "my arms were full and I put in my pocket/purse/backpack". I've done this at WalMart, etc so many times - go in for a couple small items...find more stuff I need..go up front, put it on a Water Display, mention to the Greeter - I put my stuff down while I'm going for a cart, please don't think my stuff is abandoned....". Grab a cart, load it....

unless it was a store you rarely go to, how about paying the next time you are in the store? I know I am at the same grocer a couple times a week. Rather than running back to the store, I would simply pay for it the next time I am in the store.

and of course, there is always the USPS if it is a store that was a one time thing.
I had a tiny can of 0.55 garbanzo beans that decided to hitchhike with me on a trip to Wal Mart. I didn’t see them at the back of my cart at check out and didn't realize they were there until I unpacked my cart full of bags in the parking lot. I mailed the can back as it was not my local Wal Mart and didn't have time to fix the problem right then (and yes, I was a bit paranoid about trying to take unpaid merchandise back into Wal Mart… ) That can cost me about $6. But my conscious feels free.

I can see how it might feel that way, but - at least for my part - it's more an acknowledgement that brain farts DO happen, but the circumstances matter. No one is going to believe the shoplifter who "accidentally" crammed a $500 dress in her oversized purse, so don't try to convince us here, either. But we may feel some sympathy if you do what I did, and they play Harry Hardass instead of just letting you pay for it.

I'm sure that if I treated my cashiers the way I've seen some people do, they'd have called LP on me instead of just insinuating (correctly) that I was an airhead (that day) and letting me pay for it.

I don't have to worry about it at my grocery store any more! They installed lane scanners that check the bottom of your cart, and pop up a pic of what you have down there! They're pretty nifty.

would have been cheaper to send the 55 cents, would it not? Your conscious would be clear doing that as well and it would have saved you $5.45.

I actually hadn't thought of that, but hey, if there is a next time...

It would have been atleast 45 minutes of my time, and a gallon of gas to fix an error their cashier made.

I was the least disabled person in my household. Hence doing shopping for 3, while my mother stayed at the house to take care of my grandmother.

This was not a case of returning an item I bought and ruined myself. This was a case of the cashier making a mistake, despite my saying to the effect of "Order #3...I have two of this...." and charging me for only one, despite my asking later if the the cashier got both. It's not like I threw a case of beer into my pocket or hid it. Again, tape would have proven I had gestured to it on two occasions. This isn't a case of going through Self Scan and "forgetting" the 2nd case, either, this was a cashier station.
I bet if they charged you for three cases of beer you would have driven back and/or contacted the store to get a replacement or refund. I'm not judging you, just been in retail long enough to know people always ignore things in their favor and raise hell when it's not. Be consistent and fair in all your dealings in life.

No competent LP/security/mgr would call the cops and prosecute over a missed item in a huge cart of merchandise. Well, we also know not a lot of competent people work in retail

That was a joke considering I have spent my life in various retail capacities.

I would have called in that event, yes.

Yeah, I've worked a lot of retail, and even office work. One running joke throughout the office was how my supervisor was so dumb she was not even qualified to work at McD's.
