While I agree that he should err on the side of caution until he gets the definitive answer from probation, as a note prohibition is NOT usually a condition of probation for a first offense of DUI.

I'd get it clarified.
I have a dear friend who can be a little messed up when stressed. He was arrested for cocaine and trying to beat the hell out of a neighbor (I won't go into his story, but I can't blame him for the wanting to beat the neighbor part).
He got probation. All the random testing.
He had to go to court for this: His new girlfriend made a pasta dish with a vodka sauce. And yep...it showed in his test. Cooking is supposed to burn off the alcohol.
On a side note: avoid mouthwash that contains alcohol; avoid menthol cough drops, they can give a false reading; and if you have asthma and use an inhaler, or any prescribed medications - make sure to get a doctors note. Avoid all cough syrups with alcohol. And unless your job is stocking shelves - don't even walk down the aisle of a liquor/beer department in a store. You never know where your probation officer shops or hangs out (another friend went to the same concerts as his Probation Officer, luckily for him, he doesn't drink or do drugs).
