Default I'm 17 and Live in Tennessee. Can I Be Emancipated

My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Tennessee. Im 17 and no longer wish to live with my mom and step-dad. We just recently got kicked out of our home for not paying rent. My mom and step-dad are currently staying in a motel room. I am staying with my grandparents. If I stay where I am now I have a job, a roof over my head and food. My step-dad has physically abused me more than once. He has caused me many emotional problems also. Is there anything I can do to stay? Or do I need parental consent?

You need parental consent as long as you are under 18. While you are a minor, you live where your parents say you live. BTW, you do not need to be emancipated in order to stay with your grandparents if you have parental permission. In order to be emancipated, you need to be able to show the judge that you are capable of paying 100% - that means every single penny - of what it takes to support you. If your grandparents died tomorrow, would you be able to pay rent, utilities, food, clothing, medical care, transportation, insurance, staples, school fees and supplies, etc.? If the answer is no, then emancipation is not an option.

If you are forced to return to your mother and stepdad and he abuses you, call CPS. That's what they're for.

Did you read the stickied threads?

What you're describing sounds like a circumstance in which you will want to get permission to continue to live with your grandparents, or have them seek guardianship if your parents won't consent.

How close are you to age 18?
