My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Michigan
I took over a lease from another person in January of this year. I didn't know the person and took this lease over through craigslist. I signed another lease and apparently I signed a lease takeover agreement which had an "as is" provision. I was out of state at the time and needed housing and decided to fill out the forms out of state and mail it back to michigan so I'm all set in January. Turns out the carpets weren't in great condition.
Now after move out they charge me and my 3 other roommates equal share for the carpet. First of all I hadn't done anything to the carpet. Secondly, I wasn't given an inventory checklist form as I'm usuaally given one at the beginning of every move in. They told me they didn't need to give me the inventory checklist because of the lease takeover agreement. Do I have a cause of action?
