    Default Theft from an Employee

My question involves criminal law for the state of: IL

I was an employee at an electronic store in Illinois. Yes i know, I screwed up. Yes I know i already am seeking help (consoling), and yes I learned my lesson the hard way through all this stress. I know this is bad, but as an employee, I would stuff product into the main product that I was purchasing, which is how I got caught. Total, I have stolen about 300$ worth (in about a 8 month span) and in a location with no camera views. Everything was fine until about a month ago, i decided to grab 60$ worth or product, and got caught leaving the store with it. BEFORE I left, in the store, the manager stopped me and asked me why the bag was heavy (STILL in store). At that point I knew he must of felt the bag earlier and I opened it up on a counter and we saw the product in product. Since the bag was in a location where there was NO camera views on it, I played dumb as said someone must of played a prank on me. It was late so we all went home, he took my statement on a sheet of paper ( I NEVER AT ALL ADMITTED TO ANYTHING)

The next day, I felt guilty and went in early to talk to a different manager, he was filled in on this case and I told him that IF I was NOT stopped by that manager, I would of stolen the product not knowing what was in the bag. To sum it up, I signed my own leave from the company, and the manager also signed on that dotted line, and from that day, I quit. ABOUT A MONTH LATER, (today) i hear through the grape vine that I was 'fired for stealing' Now i know i am not shocked because I actually did it, but I have NOT heard from the cops, i have NOT heard from ANYONE in the store, the cops NEVER came (yet), and NO ONE , not even HR has called me regarding this.

I am a 20 year old with NO criminal, police history at ALL and getting paranoid reading all the other stories on hear about the cops showing up. Not sure what to do, is a lawyer worth contacting or should I contact the HR department? What could a lawyer do for me?

And again, I know what i did was wrong, and I have LEARNED my lesson, and seeking help with my habit.

You were not accused directly of anything. Stay out of the store and off the property for a *long* time. If they contact you, speak to an attorney via a free consult and take it from there. Seeking help is a good start....

Unless some criminal or civil action is initiated against you, there is no need for a lawyer. If the incident was reported to the police, there is nothing that either you or a lawyer can do about it until you are charged...which I believe is unlikely with the circumstances you described.

Regardless of what you have heard "through the grapevine" from other employees, contacting HR is also likely a wasted effort. I wouldn't expect any glowing recommendations to potential future employers. But, the paperwork you signed is your official reason for termination of employment.
