Default State Residency Requirements for Getting a Name Change

My question involves name change laws in the State of: Michigan

    Hi folks,

First off, thanks very much for your time. I just have a quick question regarding residency requirements for a name change.

I'm currently a student studying at a university in Michigan, and have been here for three years (I am a junior this year). I am not originally from Michigan (my permanent residence is in TX). In my first two years of college, I lived in a dorm; this year I am living in an apartment. During the summers in between school years, I worked internships in New York, and did not have a residence in Michigan.

I'm looking to get my name changed (for non-criminal purposes, of course), and one of the requirements in Michigan for a name change is that I have been a residence here for at least a year. The problem is that while I've lived here for the past 2+ years, they haven't been continuous in the sense that I haven't lived here in the summer (or maintained a residence).

Does anybody know what options I have? Am I still able to file a name change request in the state of Michigan? If not, could I file one by proxy in Texas? My parents do maintain a permanent residence in Texas, and it's the house that I've lived in for my entire childhood life. However, as I'm currently attending school in Michigan, it seems like it would be rather difficult to get a name change in Texas if I have to show up in court for any proceedings.

Thank you again for reading, and any advice would be much appreciated.

    ~ AFL

where have you claimed residence for things such as drivers license and tax filings for the last couple of years?

    Hi jk,

    Thanks for your response.

I have a Texas DL, and haven't filed any taxes over the past three years, as I'm a college student and don't have an income. From your post, it sounds like I'm SOL for trying to get my name changed in Michigan?
