My question involves a marriage in the state of: Washington
My friend was married a short time and his wife filed for divorce.
After the petition was filed with the wife claiming no pregnancy and my friend answered and acknowledged no pregnancy she changed her story that she was pregnant and told my friend and others that the child was his.
My friend modified his answer, (where he had previously agreed wife was not pregnant), after credible evidence surfaced that she could be pregnant, (his filed modified answer is now "lacks specific knowledge").
His wife was very angry at the filing of the modified answer and has now claimed that he is not the Father and wants him to sign off on the divorce papers her lawyer has drawn up, prior to the birth of the baby.
All property and other divorce issues have been settled and the potential child birth, (my friend is still not sure about whether or not she is pregnant), is the only remaining issue.
My friend has very little specific knowledge about the potential Father and his wife is very deceptive.
He has told the lawyer that he wants to wait for the birth prior to finishing the divorce, pay for a paternity test and support and be part of the child's life if he is the Father. Both his wife and her lawyer are pressing him to finalize the divorce now prior to child birth.
What should he do?
He has not hired an attorney, and if there is no child he doesn't think he will need one.
