Question Will a Juvenile Disposition Prevent Employment as a Police Officer

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Broward County Florida.

When i was 14 i was arrested for battery. Here is the exact notes from the file the Department of Juvenile Justice Sent me.

Change of Plea > Pled No Contest/Consent > W/H Adj.

    Charges:Battery

Disposition: 35 Hours W/C Anger Management.
    Early Term of Prob.
    8:30PM Curfew.
    School Daily.

Probation > Restitution Ordered Beyond 19th Birthday.

    Judge Orlando.

That being said. I have my GED. Am i still eligible to become a LEO?

A little background before and after the arrest.
Before the Arrest i was an active Police Explorer. I was able to continue to be a Police Explorer after the arrest. I was a Police Explorer with over 200 Ride Hours until 2007 when i moved out of the county.

Since the arrest i have not gotten into trouble. No Tickets, Never been pulled over. ETC. I am now 22 going on 23. Ready to get started in a career that I've been waiting for my whole life.

I appreciate all the feed back i can get.

    Thanks again

This is not a statutory bar to employment in law enforcement. If you continued to be an Explorer AFTER the incident, then clearly the agency found you to be redeemable and the incident to be quite minor, indeed.

Yes, an agency will take it into consideration in a background, but they will also take into account your age and everything you have done since then. No trouble, good work in school, employment and the community, and you should be good to go. This shouldn't hold you back.

Now, what DOES concern me is the GED. While a GED does not mean that you have poor grammar and articulation skills, it is certainly something that is common among those with GEDs. So, only YOU know how good you are at writing, reading, and comprehension. If you have ANY troubles with spelling, syntax, grammar, or communication at all I would strongly encourage you to take local college or adult ed. courses in English, creative writing, speech, and any other course that encourages a LOT of writing and speaking. This job is all about communication and articulation. If you are weak in those areas, your chances of passing the academy are marginal, and your chances of succeeding in field training are slim. Note that you might pass the academy, but field training will focus on accuracy AND speed of writing and preparation.

    Good luck.
