Default When Should We Imprison People

When should we imprison people? Currently, we imprison people if they did something "bad" enough. However, I feel like it should be based on the idea of whether:

Paying to put the person in prison + Lost productivity of person in society > Future risk of person to society --> No prison.

    Opinions?

    When should we imprison people?

When they are found guilty of crimes carrying a custodial sentence.

I suppose you think OJ should be out on the streets, huh?

wow, if all government programs were based on a loss/benefit determination, you can toss out any sort of welfare, medicare, building any utility infrastructure, any police force....

dang, you would simply have to shut down the government entirely.

As with your other threads, my opinion is that you should do your own homework.

Welfare, and medicare are based on some sort of cost-benefit analysis. Putting someone in prison for a long time as retribution is not necessarily.

a cost benefit basis? There is no benefit to the entity paying the money. It is a benefit to the recipients. A cost/benefit analysis is where the entity paying for the program derive some benefit from it. What benefit would the government get from paying the medical bills of old people? If you think about it, it actually increases costs to the government because it results in longer life expectancy which results in higher costs for the program

It would be cheaper if they just let everybody die if they could not afford medical care.

A person's life and health are benefits. Have you ever heard of the statistical value of human life?

    what?

how does the government, the entity that is spending the money, benefiting from a person's life and health? They don't. It is a total loss system. Government pays, and pays, and pays without realizing a benefit.

I already stated the recipient benefited from the service but that it irrelevant.

It is not about the benefit to the government but rather the benefit to the society as a whole.
