    Default Phone Harassment

My question involves criminal law for the state of: TN

My son got fired from his job, he went on Gmail Voice and made hang up phone calls to his work to annoy them. Caled for about two hours.

They figured it was him and told him they were getting the police involved. So my ? is will the cops go to the trouble of getting a court order to get the IP for the Gmail account which the IP will come back to MY NAME. I was also reading hang up call to a business is not consider harassment because the person on the other end has no reasonable expectation of privacy on a business phone.

Will they? Crystal ball is out for repairs and the Magic 8 Ball is misbehaving. Can they? They most certainly can.

I believe you have been misled.

Privacy and harassment are two completely different things. Your son's phone calls actually do constitute harassment, as they were made with the intent to disrupt normal business operations.

If he is under the age of 18, kindly do us all a favor and snatch him bald-headed. If he is over the age of 18, please plant your boot in his behind. Either way, he needs to wise up before he costs you (if he's a minor) or himself more money than one might want to waste on childish nonsense.

Well he wised up and didn't call back...it was only one day for about 2 hours.. it was done on Monday and I have heard nothing from police. A X-Cop friend of mine just told me if he went to a judge to get a subpoena to get IP info over hang up calls he would be laughed at and told to go fight real crime.

Also how can they prove it was him that called since it was from an IP number? The IP is in my name and i am on a wireless router

I mean it just seems a lot of trouble for them ove prank hang up calls

It all depends on how much free time any one of them has. I have seen very trivial matters turned into major cases 'cause someone was motivated enough to pursue them more than a bit further than they should've logically went.

If the cops take the time to mess with you over this "stupid crap" then methinx you will have no choice but to take the time to be responsive, if not responsible.
