Hi. This is in New York. I( Tenant) signed a lease with the landlord and sent the application package to the board of the Condo in early May. The landlord told me last week that he has decided not to rent his apartment and that he is legally covered to do so, as there was no financial transaction between the tenant and the owner. I had also found out that the landlord was putting a hold on the board approval. Although there was no financial transaction betwen myself and the landlord, I had already submitted checks for move in fee and move in security deposit for $1200, which were cashed by the Condo management. In addition to signed lease, the landlord on numerous occasions had verbally and by emails expressed his intention of leasing the apartment to me. Can I request the landlord to pay for the damgae in terms of time and finance he has caused by backing out of a lease one month after signing? I had to pay $250 extra to my current apartment landloard as I had to extend the lease by a month while waiting for board approval.
