Angry Hotel Room Robbed During the Night, While We Were in It

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Georgia.

We were robbed at the Wesseley Inn & Suites in Atlanta, GA last Saturday night while we were in the room and 3:30am. We had just checked in exhausted after a 20hr day at 1am after missing connecting flight to Rochester. Girlfriend was startled awake as the door to our room was closing. We believe it was an inside job, someone with a door access key, front desk person really didn't seem to care at the time we reported it and did not file an incident report. Even after we had called 911 and had a report filed with the Police. Day manager knew nothing about it and has not responded to any emails that we have sent since the incident. Do we have any recourse or are we SOL???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Tim

money from my wallet, couple credit cards. brand new water proof camera with about 1200 pics including scuba diving and snorkeling of week trip to Cozumel that I have been saving for right and left for my 40th birhtday. girlfriend had bought about 400 worth of silver jewelery for her mom, my daughter, my mom, herself. expensive package of pics and DVD of dolphin swim that we did. Presents for her kids, headphones...etc. It was basically packed on the way home. We are ultimately glad for our health, but the trauma from the invasion of privacy, someone lurking in our room while sleeping was very disturbing and my girlfriend is having trouble sleeping at all in her own house now because she witnessed the perp leaving the room in the dark to back lit hall way. Put a black eye on a really great trip, ironically, travel to mexico, no problems at all, get robbed in the U.S. on the way home. What does that say about our country?

    Where's the irony?

What does that say about our country?
Absolutely nothing, really, except that crappy people exist everywhere.

This isn't a matter of something being wrong with our country, it's a matter of something being wrong with the people who stole from you. Did you give the police a complete list of the belongings that were stolen?

Since the articles were in your room rather than in the hotel's safety deposit box, the hotel may in fact escape any liability here:

Georgia law requires innkeepers to exercise extraordinary diligence to protect property entrusted to them by their guests. If a guest has complied with all reasonable rules of the inn, then the innkeeper is liable as an insurer for entrusted property which is stolen. The innkeeper may post a notice requiring guests to place valuables in a safe or other place of deposit and failure to abide by such requirement will relieve the innkeeper from any liability for such articles. In the event that an article is placed in the safe, the innkeeper shall give the guest a receipt for it and the innkeeper’s liability for loss of the entrusted article shall be $750.00 unless the guest possesses the receipt for the article claimed to have been lost. No innkeeper shall be responsible in an amount in excess of $1,000.00 for the loss or theft of any valuables, including cash and jewelry, which are contained in a package, box, bag or other container left with the innkeeper provided that the liability may be increased by written contract at no additional cost to the guest. The innkeeper must post a notice containing these terms in a conspicuous place in all rooms occupied by guests in order to take advantage of the limited liability. An innkeeper’s liability is limited to $1,000.00 for entrusted articles other than valuables unless the guest notifies the innkeeper that the value exceeds this amount. The innkeeper may adopt reasonable regulations for the innkeeper’s protection and the publication of such rules to the innkeeper’s guests shall bind them to these terms.

Check with your homeowner's insurance, you may be able to file a claim against your policy.

The irony is I was more nervous traveling to Mexico. I am not usually nervous traveling within the states.

Yes, people who feel entitled to others personal items exist everywhere.

Being after 1am we just wanted to sleep after being up at 6am, taxi, ferry off island, bus to airport, 6hr sitting in airport, flight to atlanta, 2hrs standing in line in atlanta for voucher for them to put us in that hotel, shuttle, then another shuttle to hotel. I'm sure thats exactly the people they watch to come in the door. crappy life lesson...

Your story stinks to high heaven. Are you really suggesting they followed you around all day, to hope you would immediately fall into an exhausted sleep and be deep sleepers, while they ransacked your room. No pro, would be dumb enough to rob a room at night, when they could do it during the day, with no one there, knowing the maid would be blamed.

The police reported to the scene, investigated, obtained the hotel's record of its issuance of key cards for your room, investigated the hotel's log of who had used key cards to enter your room and at what time, and concluded what? If this was an employee, there would be a log of the creation of an additional key card for your room, or there would be a record of an employee entering with a master keycard such as the ones that cleaners use.

Have you been in touch with the parent company about the burglary and the indifference of the front desk staff?

Were you able to suggest to the police anything that might have attracted a thief's attention to you? If this is an inside job, but with no prior or subsequent room burglaries, it would be a huge risk without some expectation of a really big payoff. Did you ask the police about other incidents at the hotel or look for media reports of other burglaries? You say that all of your stuff was packed - do you mean that the thief took your packed luggage?

all of those items where packed in a back pack for carry on so as not to get lost.... luggage was just clothes basically.

i'm really not sure what the police did at the front desk when they came or left. we where in the room the whole time, my girlfriend did not want to leave the room, she was basically having a panic attack, it wasn't good. manager in the morning said he would check to see who accessed the room, we have not heard anything from him, email or phone. he is not available to talk when called, so far. we keep trying.

parent company: calling prime hospitality corp to see where that goes.

we checked trip advisor after the fact, someone had their car stolen out of the parking lot previously. we are hoping to hear from the police soon.

we should have taken better care of our stuff before going to bed but we were tired, we let our guard down and payed the price.

I stay in hotels 3 or 4 nights a week. The first rule is to set the deadbolt/chain lock. It sounds like the inside job was trying to claim it even happened. If the room was key carded, the log can be read to determine what keys accessed the room.
