You are stating that it was 10 - 12 hours before your landlord noticed the spill? I would be surprised if, by that point, the damage hadn't been done.

Why are you certain that you spilled the oil if you don't remember spilling it and have no idea how the spill occurred?
Sorry, other way around - landlord probably noticed it ~4 hours after the spill, and then she told me in the morning, ~12 hours after. The oil spilled because it was on its side with a bad cap. It was almost certainly me that put it away like that; I don't remember it, but I tend to do absent minded stuff like that.

Four hours is a long time to leave oil on wood. I'm impressed, with your memory, that you can pinpoint when the spill occurred.

How much should we read between the lines here? How big of a mess did you leave? Were you drunk or stoned?

No, neither. I'm using deduction, not memory. I'm guessing the time based on when I generally cook dinner. I most likely put the oil away after that. Regardless, if that argument wouldn't fly, I'll have to just hope I can get it repaired. Will be getting in touch with an attorney to see what exactly I'm looking at. Thanks for the help, all.

Now she doesn't want to let me have a flooring expert come over to look at the floor. I am entitled to trying to repair the damage on my own, right?

No, you aren't. I was suggesting an expert so you had a much better idea if the damage can be repaired either by some sort of cleaning or replacing just the damaged flooring.

If you still live there, you can have anybody you want to look at the floor. If you don't live there any longer, the it is up to the LL whether to allow you to have anybody look at the floor.
