My suggestion:
I assume Dad is going to school full-time. He could cut down to 3/4 or half. It will take him longer to get a degree, but give him time to find employment that better supports his girlfriend and child. A lot of people do that. He'll be better able to concentrate on his grades, his child, and his g/f at the same time. Sure, it's a sacrifice, but....she sure did not get pregnant alone.....
That's for sure! and that is what he's planning to do. It's hard to find a job where he is but he's looking.
To answer your question about the DNA test. Please encourage your son to have one done. I just read a another post where some father just learned after so many years passed that he was not the biological father of his kids.
